Envirotip of the Month
Install Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL's) in your home, instead of the traditional incandescent globes or tungsten filament globes.
Incadescent globes cost around 70¢ and
last about 1000 hours. CFL's have a lifetime of around 8000 hours and cost
about $20 each, but they use only a small proportion of electricity to give
the same amount of light as an incandescent globe (a 15W CFL produces the
same brightness as a 75W incandescent). If one of each of these globes was
used 5 hours a day, the incandescent would last 200 days, while the CFL would
last 4.38 years! After 2250 hours of use by a CFL, the total cost of the
CFL (electricity included) is equal to the cost of the incandescent globe;
and you still have 5750 hours of use left! So hit mum and dad with these
statistcs and persuade them to buy CFL's; you'll help the environment, and
save money. This months tip came from: Katrina O'Mara Please send us your tips, by emailing us here.
